More information
This modern rose combines fragrance with a distinctive bicolour pattern. Flowers are almost always borne singly on long, strong stems and open in scarlet and yellow: the upper surfaces of the petals are scarlet and the reverses are pure yellow. At full open, the yellow tones recede, and the bloom presents bright red on one side and pink on the other. The petals then begin to curl, further accentuating the colour contrast. The flower retains decorative interest at all stages of development, suitable for garden display and for cutting. The fragrance is very strong; the rose received a fragrance award in 1996. The plant is densely foliated.
This bicolour tea-hybrid rose is dedicated to the Bolshoi Theatre. The outside of the petals is golden yellow with a distinct red currant border; the buds are large and globular. As the bloom opens, it becomes dark red with a slight gilded tinge. The variety has large, full flowers, strong fragrance, high growth vigour, and abundant flowering. According to observations, “Bolchoi” withstands the Russian winter well only on domestic rootstock. In cold summers, preventive measures against powdery mildew are required.
