Shoots are nearly thornless, and the foliage is small.
Opening blooms are dark pink or crimson, shifting first to purple, then a deeper purple, and finally to aspic-blue; the overall tone is dark purple. Many blooms display white streaks radiating from the center. Flowers are fairly large (6–7 cm), full, flat rosettes with dense petalling. They appear in dense, medium-sized clusters. Shoots are almost without thorns; the foliage is small and dense. The shrub reaches 4 m.
