More information
French breeders introduced a rose described as the most “black.” It is characterized as being as close as possible to true black among rose cultivars. In bud, the flowers display a distinctly black appearance. With the onset of cooler autumn weather, the blooms develop a pronounced black cast. In summer, Black Baccarat shows dark burgundy, velvety tones. On acidic soils, the variety can appear black even during hot periods. Individual blooms are moderate in size, averaging 9–10 cm in diameter, cup-shaped, dense, with heavily waved petals (about 45) whose tips are pointed and angular. Fragrance, as in many cut roses, is barely perceptible. Foliage is green with a slightly noticeable red cast. The variety bears very few thorns. Bush height is about 80 cm. Disease resistance is average. It is used mainly for cutting, but is also suitable for garden planting. A preferred site is partial shade, where the velvety-black tones are most apparent.
