More information

A rare rose cultivar bred by B. R. Cant & Sons in England in 1901. It is often placed among groundcover shrub roses, though more accurately assigned to the group of multiflora hybrids. Its parents are Suzanne Marie Rodocanachi and Victor Hugo. The full designation is Ben Cant B. R. Cant & Sons (RNS Catalogue 1910). In gardens, the variety Ben Cant bears flowers that begin a warm strawberry shade, shift to light crimson as they open, and become creamy white at full bloom. The flowers are medium-sized, up to 8 cm in diameter, and double. Flowering is continuous and very abundant, with a single inflorescence showing blooms in varied tones. The fragrance is rich and sweet, with citrus notes. Ben Cant is reported to be disease-tolerant and winter-hardy. The bush reaches 80–150 cm in height, with a spread up to 150 cm, which allows cultivation as a groundcover rose and also suits shrub culture.
