More information

One of the Rugosa hybrids, with large, semi-double (9–18 petals) purplish-pink blooms with a hint of fuchsia. Flowers measure 7–8 cm across and are strongly fragrant; deep purplish-pink buds open in early summer into slightly loosely arranged blooms, and flowering continues from early summer until frost. In favorable conditions the fragrance is detectable up to five metres away. Foliage is bright green, glossy to semi-glossy, prominently veined; shoots are covered with small prickles.

Belle Poitevine produces, beginning in late summer, large orange-red hips that remain on the plant through winter.

The shrub develops into a dense bush about 2 metres tall and about 1.5 metres wide, with good branching. Suitable for mixed plantings or for use as a hedge. Fully winter-hardy.

Grown as a rootstock; if it freezes back in winter, it recovers quickly, producing root suckers.
Tolerant of poor soils, shade-tolerant, winters without protection, and resistant to black spot, powdery mildew, and rust. Suitable soil pH: 6.1–6.5 (slightly acidic) and 6.6–7.5 (neutral).
The name translates as “the beauty of Poitou,” the region where the French breeder had a nursery.
