More information
Some specialists continue to debate whether Baronne Prevost should be classified as a remontant hybrid or a Portland rose. Highly remontant among vintage roses. The blooms are deep pink that fade to lighter pink, with a light fragrance. In the center, many small petals surround the button, creating a flattened profile. Flowers appear singly or in dense clusters of up to 4 pcs, accompanied by a “collar” of leaves. The shrub is rigid and erect, with very prickly shoots. The foliage is bright green and susceptible to black spot; incidence is typically lower in hot, dry regions. Very winter-hardy.
This remontant hybrid is grown for its fragrant, old-style blooms. Baronne Prevost produces large, rounded, reddish buds that open into wide, flat flowers, each about 10 cm in diameter and bearing over 100 petals. The outer petals are broad and smooth, while the inner petals are small and wrinkled. Flowers appear singly or in small clusters, bright pink, fading with age. It has a main flush in early summer, repeats weakly in summer, and usually produces another fairly strong flush in autumn. The flowers are strongly fragrant; the shrub is prickly, with stiff, upright shoots and a broad habit. Used in mixed plantings. Disease resistance is average; where black spot is common, preventive measures are advised.
Flowers up to 7.5 cm in diameter, in tones from almost purple to deep pink. Under ideal conditions, the blooms are densely petalled and nearly flat. Frost hardy without shelter.
