In 1988, Mr. D. Balfour, a former president of the Royal National Rose Society, travelled to Czechoslovakia, where he encountered a rose similar to New Dawn; the sole distinction noted was that the bloom carried twice as many petals. He brought back cuttings, supplied them to Peter Beals Nursery, and the rose was subsequently introduced in 1990 under the name Awakening. This variety produces densely branched flowers and exhibits the parent cultivar’s traits: sweet fragrance, an extended flowering period, winter hardiness, abundant foliage, and the capacity to grow on almost any support.
