‘Anne of Geierstein’ is a dark red Hybrid Rubiginosa / Species rose with a strong fragrance. Flowers are about 5 cm in diameter, medium-sized, single with 4–8 petals, and are produced mostly solitary or in small clusters. It blooms once in spring or summer. Buds have leafy sepals. The plant has a climbing growth habit, fragrant foliage, and leaves with 7 leaflets. It typically reaches 245–305 cm in height and about 245 cm in width. It grows in USDA zones 6b through 9b and is described as very vigorous. The rose was bred by Lord Penzance in the United Kingdom in 1894 and introduced there by Keynes, Williams & Co. in 1894, and in Australia by George Brunning - St. Kilda Nurseries in 1896, under the name ‘Anne of Geierstein’. It sets hips. The parentage is Rosa eglanteria L. (synonym) crossed with an unknown parent. The name refers to the novel “Anne of Geierstein or The Maiden of the Mist” by Sir Walter Scott (1829), set during the Burgundian Wars.
