More information
Alexander MacKenzie commemorates the first naturalist to traverse the entire Pacific coast of British Columbia. It flowers in clusters of 5–15. The blooms are bright red and double. The foliage is large and glossy. The shrub has arching, curved canes and can be trained as a spreading shrub or as a short climber. It is sometimes affected by black spot in the second half of summer. The cultivar requires spring pruning to remove dead wood.
The shrub is upright, with drooping shoot tips. Elongated, dark strawberry-red, tulip-shaped buds open into classic-form flowers with petals that bend downward. The petals gradually fade to a deep, warm pink. The scent is light, reminiscent of fresh strawberries. It blooms in waves. After rain, the outer petals may brown and dry. The cultivar is disease resistant.
