More information
Jack Harkness named this variety in honour of Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis, an English military leader. The cultivar shows strong vigour and bright colour. ‘Alexander’ produces vivid, non-fading, luminous scarlet flowers. The bush quickly reaches 2 m in height, including in the UK; blooms are borne terminally on powerful shoots and are small relative to the plant size. Individual blooms can be large with proper care. The first flowering usually carries single blooms; in later waves clusters (up to 7 flowers) may appear. Long shoots make it suitable for cutting. Foliage is small, matte, and disease-susceptible. The variety flowers abundantly, withstands rain, and is very prickly.
