Abelzieds is a medium pink Hybrid Rugosa shrub rose bred in 1968 in Latvia by Dr. Dzidra Alfredovna Rieksta at the Botanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR (now Salaspils Botanical Garden).
Buds are long and pointed. Flowers are soft to medium pink with a white center, fading to white, cup-shaped, semi-double, with about 7–12 petals. Blooms are medium-sized, 5–7 cm in diameter, borne both singly and in clusters of up to 15 on sturdy pedicels. The fragrance is light. Stamens are golden yellow, darkening with age.
Leaves are light green to green, shiny, and fragrant. Shoots are very spiny, with spines of different sizes. The shrub is upright, spreading, wide, and dense, typically 1.5–1.85 m tall and 1.5–1.85 m wide.
Descriptions differ on flowering: it is reported both as abundantly and continuously flowering and as flowering once over a period of several weeks, with occasional repeat blooms later in the season. The variety is winter-hardy and resistant to fungal diseases. It is suitable for cultivation in USDA zones 6b through 9b and is used for groups and hedges. Abelzieds has been used as a parent for several hardy, disease-resistant varieties grown in Scandinavian countries.
